Suspended Life Support
2013
Wood, clear PVC sheeting, fluorescent plant lights, soil, water, plants, clear duct tape. 10’ x 3’ x 12’
This suspended terrarium was made in an attempt to unify two dissonant forms of infrastructure; the brutalist style exposed ventilation shafts of the gallery and the biotic forms of the plants contained within the sculpture. The man made and the natural are brought together to create a dialogue between two different schools of thought; architecture and biology. The soft terrarium is inflated by the ventilation system and purifies the air before allowing it to return into the space of the gallery, thus connecting two very different but crucial support networks; the biological and manufactured.
